The statistics on elder abuse may surprise you.

  • Over 46,000 elder abuse reports are received in a single year in Massachusetts
  • 1 in 10 older adults aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse
  • Research shows only 1 in 14 elder abuse cases are reported

As we head into June, Elder Abuse Awareness Month, Mystic Valley Aging Services is shining a light on this important issue. We hope you’ll join us in spreading awareness about elder abuse and encouraging conversation and education around elder justice.

The Essentials

  • Reports are confidential.
  • You can make a report through the state’s 24/7 Hotline at 800-922-2275.
  • You can also make an online report.
  • Mystic Valley Aging Services is designated by the state to respond to reports in our region. You can visit www.mves.org/protective-services to learn more, including information for Mandatory Reporters (such as health providers and law enforcement) and how to report abuse in a nursing facility.

Types of Elder Abuse

  • Physical abuse: Hitting, pushing, kicking, or inappropriate use of drugs or restraints
  • Emotional abuse: Insults, threats, humiliation, controlling behavior, confinement, and isolation
  • Financial exploitation: Misusing or stealing a person’s money or assets
  • Medication abuse: Misuse of a person’s medications on purpose or by accident
  • Sexual abuse: Sexual contact without consent
  • Neglect or Abandonment: Lack of food, housing, medical care, or a healthy environment

Supporting an Older Adult in Need

  • Listen without judgment to their experiences.
  • Be respectful of their concerns and their right to make decisions.
  • Use supportive language, such as “I am concerned,” “I believe you,” and “I am here for you.”

Elder Abuse Awareness Month is an opportunity. Check in on the older adults in your life. Pay attention to signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Speak up when something feels wrong. Look for ways to share the information you’ve learned about elder abuse. Together, we can build a community where everyone is free to age with safety and respect.

On a lighter note, June 15 is also Elder Abuse Awareness Day — wear purple to show your support!
