Several older adult women laugh and smile as they approach a beaver statue at the Museum of Science in Boston.

Mystic Valley Elder Services (MVES) recently coordinated a special excursion to the Museum of Science, creating an opportunity for older adults and people with disabilities to experience one of Boston’s cultural institutions. Too often, our residents face barriers that limit access to outings like this. Our goal was to remove those barriers and provide an experience filled with curiosity, connection and joy.

As an informal pilot organized through our Supportive Housing program, the trip brought together residents from four of our partner sites with the Malden Housing Authority. Throughout the trip, the Museum of Science provided a specialized experience. The adventure included:

A woman with a walker gives a big grin as she stands by a natural history exhibit at the Museum of Science in Boston.
  • Exploration of museum exhibits
  • An incredible OMNI Theater show
  • A live-animal presentation
  • Lunch at the museum’s cafes
  • Roundtrip transportation

The outing fostered social connection while offering residents an opportunity to learn and nurture their sense of curiosity and exploration.

We extend our appreciation to Michael Adams and the rest of the Museum of Science team for providing a “VIP experience.” We also appreciate Magan Transport for ensuring our residents’ needs were met.

Finally, we’d like to recognize the dedication of our Supportive Housing staff, including project lead Mariia Filippova and trip organizers Terri Fitzgerald, Anthony LaFauci, Kerry Kisiel, Michelle Terry‑David, and Sarah Nalley Schad.

This trip reflects our ongoing commitment to providing meaningful, community‑based experiences that enrich the lives of the people we serve. As we continue to explore new ways to bring accessible adventures to our residents, we look forward to building on the success of this pilot.

Dozens of older adults and adults with disabilities, along with Mystic Valley Elder Services staff, smile and wave at the camera while in the lobby of the Museum of Science.
