MVES Shares Cooling Center Locations and Heat Safety Resources

The summer of 2024 is off to a hot start! In fact, our first major heatwave hit prior to the first day of summer.

As we’re heading into extreme heat again, MVES would like to share a list of Cooling Centers throughout the 11 communities we serve. Cooling Centers are essential to communities, as health officials warn that electric fans may not be enough to prevent heat illness during extreme heat. They recommend spending at least part of the day in air conditioning. This is especially important for older adults, as our bodies respond to heat differently over the age of 50.

Additionally, scroll down for a list of helpful resources for coping with the heat, ranging from recognizing the signs of heat stroke to the AARP’s tip for keeping an air conditioner running well.

Can You Help Keep a Neighbor Cool – and Safe?

Did you know that air conditioners are one of the most requested items from our Independence Fund? Sometimes, our staff are working with an older adult and realize the individual is facing an urgent need. It could be overdue dental work or a mattress so worn that the metal coils are poking out. As long as it’s something they urgently need and it can’t be paid for in another way, it’s eligible for a request to the MVES Independence Fund. All too often, we encounter older adults with medical conditions who would be drastically safer and more comfortable if an AC unit was installed in their home. To donate to our Independence Fund and help a neighbor today, click the button below to make a secure donation on our website. Donations of any amount are welcomed.

*Note: This fund was previously named Elder Independence Fund.
