Today, October 9, 2024, is Ageism Awareness Day. There are many reasons to take a stand against ageism, today and every day. Here are 5 of those reasons that affect all of us, regardless of our current age. These examples reflect both feedback from aging individuals and the outcomes we see in our society.

  • The Golden Rule: Treat people of different ages as you’d like to be treated. After all, we’re ALL aging!
  • Ageism often intersects with other forms of discrimination (such as race, gender, disability) in ways that are harmful to individuals as well as our society.
  • People with positive self-perception of aging live an average 7.5 years long than those with less positive perceptions.
  • Ageism is ingrained in our culture, as is often the case with discrimination. It can be perceived as acceptable, and many of us have an unconscious bias when it comes to aging.
  • Ageism isn’t just unkind – which is reason enough to stand against it – but it creates harmful outcomes in healthcare, the workplace, and many other settings.

We can’t eliminate ageism until we recognize it. That means confronting your own truths and calling out ageism when you see it.
