Empowering Choices for Positive Aging
More than 60 years ago, President John F. Kennedy established the tradition known today as Older Americans Month. This observance, held every May, has two purposes. It recognizes the many ways older citizens have contributed to our country, and it reaffirms our commitment to the support that Americans need and deserve as they age.
This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention and wellness as cornerstones of a positive aging experience. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health by advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care and making informed decisions that support independence.
At Mystic Valley Elder Services (MVES), we celebrate the theme of advocating for one’s own health and wellness. We’re here to provide resources and tools that empower your decisions. Whether we’re helping you understand your health insurance options, organizing Healthy Aging classes or navigating the services available to you, our goal is to facilitate your choices and your well-being.
A few tips on taking charge of your health at every age:
- Stay up to date on preventive care and screenings.
- Build and maintain social connections that support emotional well-being.
- Choose nutritious, minimally processed foods.
- Incorporate regular physical activity to maintain strength and mobility.
- Practice daily habits that support mental health and resilience.
If you’d like to take an active role in empowering older adults to champion their health, there are many ways to get involved.
- Volunteer — learn about volunteering with MVES or check out our recent Volunteer Appreciation Event!
- Join our Advisory Council, which ensures that community voices help shape programs and services for older adults. Council members contribute insight to planning and oversight that directly influences our work. If interested, call 781-873-4422 or email [email protected] for more information.
- Donate — every donation helps us protect services that empower independence for older adults and people with disabilities. Visit www.mves.org/donate.
- Raise your voice — ask your state and federal lawmakers to stand behind legislative priorities that preserve and expand the support network for older adults. As MA Representative Jeffrey Turco said at our recent Legislative Breakfast, “be fierce advocates!”
